Awards and HonorsOur faculty member Assoc. Prof. Elif Nur Fırat Karalar from the Department of Molecular Biology and Genetics and School of Medicine has been elected as a member of the European Molecular Biology Organization (EMBO). With over 2,000 members, including 92 Nobel Prize-winning researchers, EMBO is known for its work that steers the direction of lifesciences worldwide.
With Assoc. Prof. Elif Nur Fırat Karalar, the only member elected from Türkiye this year, Koç University became the first school to represent Türkiye in EMBO with more than onefaculty member.
This year, a total of 100 new members and 20 associate members from around the world joined the organization due to their immense contributions to fundamental life scienceresearch. Türkiye has been a member since 1993 and as of 2024 has six faculty members in EMBO.
This year, EMBO is celebrating its 60th anniversary.
Asst. Prof. Levent Beker ERC (European Research Council) Grant
Asst. Prof. Levent Beker from our Department of Mechanical Engineering has been honored with the prestigious ERC Proof of Concept Grant for his pioneering project, "Wearable Ultrasound for Continuous Bladder Monitoring." Dr. Beker, the sole recipient of this esteemed support from Türkiye, is at the forefront of developing an innovative solution that enables patients to monitor their bladder volume outside the hospital setting continuously. In this 18-month project, with a budget of 150,000 Euros, Dr. Beker will collaborate with Prof. Tufan Tarcan and Assoc. Prof. Ersin Köseoğlu from the School of Medicine.
