Abstract:

The demand on the performance of wireless communication networks is constantly increasing. To date, conventional sub 6 GHz bands were able to keep up with the requirements through continuous improvements in spectral efficiency. Consequently, advancing this area further became exceptionally costly. Therefore, despite the industry resistance towards changing the already established telecommunications ecosystem, carrier frequency, hence operation bandwidth, increase method is chosen as the alternative.

In this thesis, the two spectra chosen for utilization, the 60 GHz industrial, scientific and medical radio band and the low end of the THz band (260-400 GHz), are researched. The standardization activities for mobile and nomadic networks are investigated, and both theoretical and experimental studies on the physical layer subjects of the higher frequency bands, such as channel modeling, modulation and material characteristics, are conducted. As the initial wireless personal area network standard of the low THz band is already ratified and millimeter wave bands are being explored within the Release 16 of 3GPP 5G specifications, both spectra are going to be fundamental parts of the next generation of mass market wireless communication systems.
