Koç Sociology Talks: Gary Alan Fine, Northwestern University, Group Life

In Group Life: An Invitation to Local Sociology, Gary Alan Fine and Tim Hallett make the argument that sociologists have the obligation to examine the role of small communities in the creation of both the interaction order and structural realities. Building on our extensive ethnographic research projects, I claim that, despite the well-recognized importance of institutions and individuals, group life is a fundamental building block of community. Presenting a set of theoretical concepts (interaction order, group culture, circuits of action, and tiny publics), I describe how group commitments shape selves and society, emphasizing the importance of a meso-level approach to social organization. By emphasizing the importance of shared action, I address how group-oriented sociologists can address identity, culture, conflict, and control. I conclude by considering how a network of groups provides insight into the existence of extended communication channels and social media lattices. Ultimately, I assure that group interaction provides a hinge linking persons and populations.
